People usually seek therapy when they are stuck in old ways of thinking/behaving that are no longer working or when they are experiencing a crisis of some sort. Emotions are often overriding thinking and are dictating ones thoughts/feelings/actions. Feelings are often of a more negative nature and/or of a more hopeless/helpless nature. Thinking is often subjective and can involve blaming self or others and seeing things worse than they really are. Actions are often reactive and counterproductive. When this persists over time, well-being is lost, relationships become disturbed and internal resources become depleted.
Therapy provides an avenue to interrupt this process. It provides an opportunity to take a step back and to “see” what is really going on vs. what on imagines is going on. It involves trying to “think/reflect” on one’s life vs. just automatically responding to life’s stresses. In this process, a person is often able to gain a broader perspective, see things in a new light and identify new options for dealing with old problems. In this thinking process, people are often able to identify patterns that keep them stuck, move beyond blaming self or other, and identify new ways of operating in relationships.
When one is thinking more objectively and living more responsibly in their important relationships, balance is restored.
